Hmm. How to describe Eerie Queerie?
Published by Tokyopop, and written by Shuri Shiozu, it tells the story of a kawaii schoolboy, Mitsuo, who can talk to (and be possessed by) ghosts. His fellow classmates, Hasunuma (who takes an inordinate amount of interest in Mitsuo from the start), and the angst-ridden Ichi, who sees similarities to his dead crush in the hapless Mitsuo, and all of the situations interacting with ghosts puts them in.
Throughout the books there are hints of slash, with practically all the male characters Mitsuo encounters developing some feelings for him, from the helpful Hasunuma to the pervy Chief Priest.
There are four books in total, and each one is packed with action. This can make the drawings a bit hectic, but the artist knows when to slow down and use larger panels, and there are some truly beautiful drawings in just the right places. In each book there are roughly two complete stories. In the first book this takes the form of two completely separate hauntings (Mitsuo being the one possessed in each), and it is from these goings on that you are introduced to each of the main characters.
A full slash relationship is formed by the end of the series, although it does not have any explicit yaoi scenes (why it is only rated 16+) and despite all the action in between the development of the relationship is fairly consistent.
The end of each book has some sugoi chibi Mitsuo artwork. Not really a side story, just a bit of fun. As well as a summary of the next book in the series and explanations of some of the cultural/religious practices used in the stories (such as Hasunuma's Charm Cards, and the Hundred Fold Prayer in the back of the second book).
My only complaint with Eerie Queerie would be to say that the fourth book ended too abruptly, and I didn't see the point of some characters. Ichi is mainly used to provide the comic moments, with his competitiveness against Hasunuma, and the pervy Priest managed to freak me out in some places, as being a bit too pervy.
Other than that, I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who is looking for something fun and fast paced to read.
