Cesare Borgia (yes, based upon the historical figure) is the 'hero' of this tale. Although protagonist would be the better term, for Cesare is certainly no Prince Charming or Robin Hood. Indeed, our prince is out for his own self, looking to conquer and rule. The manga contains quite a bit of bloodshed and violence, yet there are some warm moments between brother and sister, as well as Cesare and his right-hand man, Chiaro, as Cesare grows up.
The whole manga is drawn with absolutely wonderful detail and alot of pretty men. Yet, the rich plot is wrought with darkness as well. Cesare, when he was but a babe, had his soul sold to the devil in order for his father to gain way to the Papal throne.
Higuri You represents a dark tale about a man trying to fight off his demons, resulting in an exquisitely-drawn story. She weaves history together with rich detailed drawing. Even if you're not a fan of history, her beautiful art is gorgeous enough to make up for that. She draws terrific bishounen, with very detailed, rich backgrounds. This is not simple manga, it is a work of art.
Her characters are driven by base things, such as lust, hunger and revenge, yet the details she put into each character is clear and well-thought.
I highly recommend it. Beware though, there are a few tame scenes of incest, and some (not enough) kissing between Cesare and Chiaro. It is worth it though, to see the buildup between Cesare and Chiaro.
Cantarella, beyond the historical context, is a tale about a man struggling to regain his own humanity. It's a battle between good and evil. But really, which is the good side?
